This page answers common questions about the types of music
About the Music
What kind of music does the choir sing?
Our repertoire includes a variety of choral music, from traditional and classical works to contemporary pieces, folk music and other styles. Each season offers something different.
How difficult is the repertoire?
Our repertoire varies from season to season and includes music of different levels of difficulty. We learn our music together at rehearsals, and you don’t need to be an expert singer to participate.
Do I need to be able to read music?
Being able to read music is helpful, but you don’t need to be an expert. We learn our music together at rehearsals and provide resources to help you learn your part.
Will music be provided, or do I need to purchase it?
The choir provides the music, and your membership fees help cover the cost of purchasing it. We have paper copies available, or, if you prefer to use a tablet, digital copies are also available.
Do I need to memorize the music?
For the most part, no. However, on occasion, you may be asked to memorize a piece or part of a piece for a performance.
About Experience
Do I need previous choir experience?
Not necessarily. We welcome singers with different levels of experience. You should have a love of singing and be comfortable singing as part of a group.
Do I need to have sung in a choir before?
No. Previous choir experience is helpful, but it is not required. Our open rehearsals are a great opportunity to experience what it is like to sing with us.
What if I don’t read music very well?
That’s okay! While music-reading skills are helpful, you can still learn your part by listening, following along at rehearsals, and using the resources provided.
What if I haven’t sung for many years?
That’s not a problem. Many people return to singing after a break. The open rehearsals give you a chance to ease back into singing and see how you feel about joining the choir.
How are members placed in voice sections?
Your audition helps us determine the voice section that is the best fit for you. You may be asked to sing in a few different ranges as part of the process.
Rehearsals & Performances
How often does the choir rehearse?
We rehearse once a week during the regular choir season, Tuesdays from 7:30–9:30 PM at Woodroffe United Church, 207 Woodroffe Ave., Ottawa, ON. Our season runs from September to May, with a break over the Christmas holidays.
What happens if I have to miss a rehearsal?
We understand that life happens! However, regular attendance is important, especially as we get closer to performances. We encourage members to attend as many rehearsals as possible so they can keep up with the music and contribute to the choir.
How many concerts do you perform each season?
We typically perform two major concerts each season, one in December and one in May. During the year, we may also have other smaller performances at seniors’ residences or other venues as part of the choir’s mandate to perform and contribute to the community.
Do I have to participate in every concert?
We anticipate that members will participate in our two major concerts whenever possible. We understand that sometimes life gets in the way, so attendance at every performance is not set in stone.
Membership, Costs & Volunteering
How much does it cost to join?
The current membership fee is $250 per year. You can pay the full amount in September, or in two instalments of $125—one in September and one in January. If you have difficulty paying the membership fee, you can speak with the choir president or treasurer to request assistance.
Are there other costs besides the membership fee?
Yes. We hold a few workshops throughout the year. The cost of these workshops is typically shared among the participating choir members and varies depending on the type of workshop and venue.
Do choir members need to participate in fundraising?
Yes. Fundraising is an important part of supporting the choir throughout the year. Members are expected to participate in our fundraising activities whenever possible. These efforts help support the choir and keep membership fees affordable.
Do choir members need to volunteer?
There are many opportunities throughout the season for members to help with concerts, events and other choir activities. It takes a team to run a choir, and any help is always welcome!
What if I’m nervous about auditioning?
That’s completely normal! The audition is not about being a perfect singer. It’s simply a way for us to get to know your voice, determine your placement, and make sure the choir is a good fit for you. Our open rehearsals are a great way to get comfortable with the choir before auditioning.
